My 7 All-Time Favorite Fashion & Celebrity Photographers

Most of my professional career has been spent working in the fashion industry. Fashion Design is what I went to school for and what I have always had an immense passion for. I remember buying fashion magazines such as: Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Marie Claire, etc. when I entered middle school. I would tear out all the images that caught my eye and would cover my whole bedroom wall until it resembled high-fashion wallpaper.

Many of the images I would stare at day in and day out were taken by some of the photographers who inspired me to pursue a career in fashion.

Here are some of my all time favorites in no particular order:

Herb Ritts

Herb Ritts, born in August 13, 1952, passed away in December 26, 2002 at the young age of 50.  With no formal training in photography, Ritts and Richard Gere, an aspiring actor at the time, shot some images together. That image later gained some attention and helped jumped start both their professional careers.

By 1981, Ritts gained instant stardom when he shot Brooke Shields for the cover of Vogue and the same year photographed Olivia Newton John for her Physical album cover. He continued to have the opportunity to work with celebrities such as: Elton John, Michael Jackson, Tom Cruise, Elizabeth Taylor, Dalai Lama and many, many more.

Which Photographer Network Should You Use?

Even though Flickr and 500px are the most famous social networks for photographers there are actually a whole bunch of other websites dedicated to bringing the most “photographer-friendly” experience as they can offer. I have tested a lot of them so I wanted to share my experience and opinion. It is only what I saw and experienced so it might be different from your own experience as each and every single photographer has different priorities.

I have talked about Shutterstock, GettyImages, Digital photo magazine, CrowMedia, My-Art and Fine Art America in the “Publishing, Exhibiting and Selling your Photos” article. They are all printed and/or online magazines or dedicated platforms for high quality pictures to be sold. Here, it is more about the social interactivity that each networks bring to their users.

How to Shoot like Annie Leibovitz – (Part 1: The Look)

Annie Leibovitz is perhaps the most well-known and well-respected living American photographer. Her career spans for more than four decades, starting at Rolling Stone, and then moving on to Vanity Fair, Vogue, and you name it. Her style and subject matter is as expansive as her career, from iconic editorial celebrity shoots the likes of John Lennon and Yoko Ono to her more recent and deeply personal American landscapes in her book “Pilgrimage.”

To condense her lifetime of work into a handful of articles certainly won’t do her justice. Instead, we will focus on just her fashion photography that’s come to define the look of Vanity Fair. In this month long (probably longer) exposé, we will scratch the surface of Annie’s work, the craft behind her photographs, and how to shoot models in her style.

iLHP is in Vogue!

And we are in California! To bring you new original content and to wrap up Part 3 of the Terry Richardson series, iLHP will be shooting in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego for the month of August. Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of shooting with Camille H. She is a 19 y/o up-and-coming model from Oakland, CA. I cannot rave enough about this girl. She is genuine, intuitive, and professional. Camille can read my mind in terms of what this photographer is looking for. When things click, the creative process becomes such a joy.

More photos are in the gallery below. A detailed interview and article will also follow.
