As you all know now, we, at iLHP, love wildlife photography and try to share with you interviews with great photographers in that field. You probably remember that we interviewed this fantastic young photographer (here), Michel D’Oultremont who had just won the Rising Star Award of the BBC Wildlife and the  Fritz Polking Nachwuchspreis. And What If The Gear Was Also What Makes… You a Better Photographer?

Of course, it’s the photographer who takes/makes the photograph. I’ve always said that but in the end, isn’t it a little demagogic. I know I’m not going to make a lot of friends saying this but, I do not completely agree when I hear that the equipment is not the photographer. Of course it is the photographer … at least partially! There are too many ingredients that makes that a photo will touch other people for us to exclude THIS reason. An 85mm f/1.4 is quite superior to a 28-70mm f3.5/5.6. And what if behind this “truth”, were hiding other feelings…

Photography is intimately linked to camera equipment. For a singer for instance, there is really no artifice. But a picture, it is different …

Talent is obviously above the material contingencies but with very good material it is better expressed if not simply expressed themselves. Cartier-Bresson worked with Leica, Vincent Munier, with the latest Nikkor telephoto lenses and Ussain Bolt does not beat his records with my sneakers! (Read our article about the favorite lenses of famous photographers)

So we all agree that these talented characters would still be very talented with low-end gear. But why be masochistic and work with cheap equipment just because we have talent? And why, if you have no talent – in one’s opinion – shouldn’t we use a wonderful lens? There, I think we will all agree.

I am aware that I therefore address a very tricky topic because often visceral. There are so many different ways to take photographs! With very simple equipment or very complex, very expensive or just very affordable, like your smartphone. Very pragmatic or artful, with or without talent …

iLHP and Zeiss at PhotoPlus Expo 2015: Exclusive Interview

For the past year, iLHP has been collaborating with some of the industry’s best brands and manufacturers in order to bring you the newest and latest in photography. We’ve had early sneak previews and exclusive interviews. This past month, we attended the PhotoPlus Expo in New York City and met with ZEISS. We had the fortune of speaking with Nicole (Marketing Manager), Christoph (Brand and Product Communications), and Christophe (Senior Product Manager).

They were very enthusiast in answering your and our questions. Many projects are being developed and as you can imagine the partnership with Sony is their main point of focus, so to speak. There are obviously some secrets that they have to keep as the industrial competition is always ongoing but they could let us know that we can expect about 5 new Full-Frame E-mount lenses, including 2 to 3 new ones in 2016.

The Full Frame system is now clearly what the engineering and R&D teams in Germany are asked to develop. The A5100 and the A6000 are amazing cameras but are not the primary targets they want to address. They admitted being surprised by how popular and successful the A7 series is.

Are the Extra Dollars Worth the Upgrade to the Full Frame Sensor?

Most professional photographers work with full frame cameras. No surprise here, it is known to yield the best image quality. That said, the latest APS-C size sensors have improved drastically lately. The Sony A6000 and the Nikon D7200 and the D5300 are the proof that this sensor size can be excellent (for the most camera geeks of you, you will have noticed that these 3 have the same 24.3MP Sony sensor but Nikon has its own way of working with it).

This test here is showing how close it can be. The gap seems to get smaller and smaller lately, so is it worth upgrading your gear to have a full frame sensor knowing a full frame camera and all the lenses are significantly more expensive? There are many criteria to take into account.

Investing into a camera system can be very costly. The body itself is expensive but the lenses are the most expensive purchases. Fortunately, the lenses can last for decades if well maintained and treated. They also lose less value over time then the camera body. But even if we can change the camera body relatively more easily, the system we invest in determines the lenses you will buy.

Questions: Is it worth investing in a full frame sensor nowadays knowing the APS-C size (and even the micro 4/3rd sensors to a lower extent) have a great image quality, most of the time similar?What criteria are to take into account?

Getting Prepared for Travel and Holiday Photography

Before leaving your house with the whole package on your back for your summer vacations, some tips are good to know or recall for your camera safety, to take the most original shots and just to enjoy your trip!

Before starting the count down, it is important to determine what type of photography you are going to do. Are you just looking for some souvenirs and selfies, then in this case a Point&Shoot ( theRX100M III is probably one of the best for this. Otherwise for $80, you can get great holiday pictures with this Sony W800) or even a smartphone can do the job, no need to bring 20 pounds (10kg) of equipment and come back at work with a backache!

But if you are an enthusiast photographer and if the light and the depth of field and the overall quality of your pictures matter the most, then you will consider bringing your “stuff” with you. If you really want to travel light, then a 24-70mm or a 24-105mm will do the job as an all-around lens.
